North Queensland Sailing exists to provide a co-ordinated approach to the development and promotion of sailing in the region and to assist the clubs with resources and training

    1.     Training courses for Sailing J24's now happening in Cairns with the first 45 now through the course and moving onto regular sailing and competent crew courses the next 15 beginners are now underway.      A  navigation night will be run in June as part of an ongoing program.
Recently 12 volunteers have undertaken the  TL3, Safety Boat and Instructor Program and 5 persons the Yachtmaster Offshore program.  A Race Management and Race Participant program is planned for early June.

Dinghy Racing and Sailing is again a regular event on Cairns Inlet, after a "short" breather, with Pacers, Lasers, Vagabonds, 49er's, Cats, Flying Ants now participating regularly on Saturday afternoons.  It is just a credit to those at the CYC who have started again from nothing to develop a regular and fun filled event followed by a sausage sizzle.  A few past sailors and a number of people who have recently joined in sail training are now involved.  This is fun sailing so come along and get involved.

    3.  Congratulations to Mission Beach Club as they move into their new premises and facility for training and boat management.  Mission Beach is well set up for Junior and Senior Training with a fleet of boats, storage and facilities and regular weekend sailing is about to recommence.

by Peter MacGregor:: School Team from Townsville does NQ proud. Six students from Townsville’s Pimlico State High School travelled to Brisbane over the Easter school holidays to compete in the BMW Motor-line 2007 Queensland Secondary Schools Team Racing Champi-onships. Viv Haydon, Sam Robin-son, Brendan Torpelund, Tim Hill, Michael Ryan and Andrew Torpelund who are also mem-bers of the Townsville Sailing Club took on the might of the Brisbane GPS sailing fraternity and almost won. What makes this achieve-ment even more remarkable is that this team has no boats to train in! They have had to travel the 800km round trip to Lake Tinaroo over a weekend to bor-row boats and compete in the local regional competition. Pimlico dominated the local regattas and therefore won the right to represent NQ. The state championship was conducted over three days on Moreton Bay by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Day one saw the 16 teams split into 3 different pools. Pim-lico was matched against, An-glican Church Grammar School, Moreton Bay College, St Marga-ret’s College and Rockhampton Grammar School. All these schools have their own boats, paid coaches and any number of additional resources at their dis-posal. At the end of Day 1 Pim-lico SHS remained undefeated. Day 2 saw the teams matched against the same teams in a second round robin. The boys from NQ finished on top of the pool and therefore won the right to move into the Gold Fleet for the finals. In the finals Pimlico easily accounted for The Anglican Church Grammar School and Matthew Flinders Anglican Col-lege. They unfortunately then lost by the narrowest of margins to Rockhampton Grammar School and Iona College. Unfor-tunately the State Title had slipped through their grasp but there was one last task to com-plete. The last race of the competi-tion was against Brisbane Boys College, the eventual winners and undefeated in the competi-tion to date. Pimlico spoilt their record and won the contest! How good could this team be with proper coaching and a fleet of boats in which they could train and compete.
